Yes, that lightning is real in the background. On night #215, I felt particularly daring so I shot some video during an oncoming electrical storm and took a freeze frame. Not a bad capture, but I would have liked the lightning a little more intense. You have to admit, the look on the face is pretty fitting.
Coming out of the rehab house now after seeing Dad, the sky was turning black and the birds gathered to discuss the route to avoid the oncoming storm. It was pretty close to a real life Hitchcock film.
The OTHER side of the sky has the sunset. That's where the colors live, that's where it looks the best.
